Case Study: Manyavar Mohey Ritual Subversion Controversy (2021)
In September 2021, bridal ethnic wear brand Mohey (a sub-brand of Manyavar) launched a prominent television commercial featuring Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt as a bride. The commercial depicted the traditional Hindu wedding ritual of *Kanyadaan* (giving the daughter away). Through monologue and imagery, the bride questions the patriarchal implications of treating women as items of donation, suggesting instead a new ritual named *Kanyamaan* ("respect for the daughter").
“Attempting to reform sacred liturgy inside commercial ad copy risks alienating audiences who perceive it as a selective critique of traditional heritage.”
1. Challenging Religious Liturgy in Ads
The advertisement set off an intense nationwide controversy. While many progressive consumers and commentators praised the ad for its gender-equal perspective and modern messaging, conservative viewers and groups took offense. Critics accused the brand of religious subversion, arguing that Mohey was misinterpreting and attacking ancient sacred texts for commercial gain. Opponents noted that the ad selectively targeted Hindu rituals while avoiding critiques of marriage practices in other faiths.
This represented a highly polarizing **SR-02 (Mitigation of Sacred Symbolism / Ritual Redirection)**. The copy choice challenged the literal definition of religious wedding rites, which conservative audiences interpreted as an attempt to diminish the sanctity of their traditions.
2. Public Response and Strategic Implications
Under ASCI code Chapter II, advertisements must avoid causing grave or widespread offense, particularly concerning religious and cultural beliefs. The creative path taken by Mohey demonstrates that redefining sacred rituals to fit corporate positioning can polarize a massive target audience and drive consumer boycott trends.
Unlike other brands that chose immediate recall, Manyavar kept the ad active, betting on the demographic divide. However, the controversy permanently colored the campaign's reception and created a structural blueprint for how modern social campaigns encounter pushback. For creative directors, this case proves that campaigns seeking to rewrite traditional customs require thorough risk assessment across diverse demographic panels before launch.
