Case Study: Dabur Fem Same-Sex Karwa Chauth Controversy (2021)
In October 2021, consumer goods giant Dabur released a festive advertisement for its skin-bleach brand, Fem Gold Bleach. The commercial depicted a same-sex female couple (two women) preparing for and celebrating the traditional Hindu festival of *Karwa Chauth*, looking at each other through the sieve. The dialogue emphasized skin glow for the festive night, framing their partnership as modern, inclusive, and normal.
“Attempts to synthesize progressive social values with highly traditional religious rituals present a high-risk compliance profile.”
1. Progressive Synthesis vs. Traditional Sentiment
The advertisement was initially praised by progressive circles and LGBTQ+ advocates as a major step forward for inclusive marketing in India. However, it quickly triggered a massive conservative backlash. Opponents and political leaders, including state home ministers, accused Dabur of using a sacred traditional Hindu festival to promote progressive agendas, calling the ad offensive to religious rituals. Some political authorities warned of legal action against the brand if the advertisement was not removed immediately.
This represents a high-severity **SR-02 (Progressive Synthesis / Sacred Custom Alteration)** mismatch. The creative execution failed to balance progressive social messaging with the sensitivities of a highly traditional consumer demographic, leading to immediate demands for boycotts.
2. Crisis Management and Ad Recall
Under ASCI code Chapter II guidelines, advertisements must not cause grave or widespread offense or be derogatory to religious sentiments. The controversy highlights that copywriters and compliance teams must evaluate the systemic risk of combining progressive advocacy with traditional religious imagery.
Facing threats of legal prosecution and an intensifying public boycott campaign, Dabur issued an unconditional public apology and withdrew the advertisement. The case provides a stark lesson for compliance teams: attempts to synthesize progressive social values with highly traditional religious rituals present a high-risk compliance profile. Brand managers must test such narratives against regional regulatory frameworks and public tolerance limits.
